PDA即興型英語ディベート

2022年度即興型英語ディベート練習会2

On Wednesday (6/1), the debate students met for the second debate practice session. For beginners, we focused on rebuts and points of interest (POIs). The experienced students practiced using personal experience to support their ideas.

For rebutting, students practiced different ways to rebut, for example, saying that the other team's ideas are not true, not important, contradictory, and so on. For POIs, they were strongly encouraged interrupt when they cannot hear or understand the other side because without understanding each other the debates cannot proceed smoothly. They were also told to use POI interruptions to deliver extra rebuts. After various practice actives, the beginners took part in a full debate so that they could practice the skills from this time and the first practice meeting. They did very well, especially in the length of their speeches and the number of rebuts and POIs that they used.

The experienced students spent their time practicing linking personal experience to their positions. Personal experiences are a powerful way to tap into ethos and pathos. Ethos involves getting people to trust you as a speaker, and so agree with you. Pathos involves getting the audience to have the same feeling as you, and so agree with you. Personal experiences, when well explained, are easy for people to understand as we share many such experiences, so the students are practicing them for their debate. They were given debate topics and time to think of personal experiences they could use. Then, they practiced delivering those in front of the other members and received feedback. We look forward to them giving powerful arguments when the debate sessions begin at the end of June.
