PDA即興型英語ディベート
2025年度第2回即興型英語ディベート
On Monday June 2nd, we held the second debate meeting of this academic year.
First, students learnt in more detail about Points of Information (POIs), which are used to ask questions or make comments during one of the other team's speeches. Using these, debaters can check that they have understood the other team, get more explanation from the other team, or attack the other team. After this, the students played a speaking game to practice making POIs and warm up for later activities.
Next, students studied how to rebut the other team's ideas. They were taught to restate the other team's idea, state that it is not good, give a reason why it is not good, and then explain this with a reason and example. After this, the students practiced rebutting using a the most appropiate rebutting style for different ideas.
Finally, students did their first debate with online judges from the PDA organization. The topic was School trips should be abolished. (修学旅行を廃止するべきである。) The students did an incredible job. Especially good points were, students' excellent English, well explained points and rebuttals, a large number of attack-style POIs, and great teamwork.
Well done, everyone!
