PDA即興型英語ディベート
2025年度第6回即興型英語ディベート
On Monday September 8th, we held the sixth debate meeting of this academic year, which was the first of Term 2.
First, students listened to reports by the students who took part in the two summer camps during the summer vacation. The camp participants noted several things, including:
1. There are some more difficult debate topics.
2. It was interesting debating against students from other schools.
3. It was interesting hearing about other schools' ways of practicing debate.
4. Keeping records about different topics is useful for having information to use in debates.
Next, they were introduced to and practiced two more advanced debating techniques. The first was thinking about what approach is best for you for the debate motion: Do you know more about the economic issues, human issues or cultural issues connected with the topic? Students were encouraged to brainstorm ideas for each of these area and pick the one they know the most about to build their points. The second was technique was to think more about the mechanisms involved in implementing debate motions. This is especially important for the government team because they not only need to explain why a motion should be supported, but also how the motion could actually be implemented.
Rebutting with one of your own team's point is powerful because it helps develop the debate's clashpoint in a way that shows your side to be stronger. This is especially helpful for the final speaker because they will need to summarize the debate and explain why your team is the winner. Saying your team is the winner is much easier if you can say that your ideas directly rebutted their ideas.
Finally, the students had a practice debate with online judges. The topic was After-school club activities in schools should be abolished. 学校における放課後のクラブ活動は廃止すべきである。Teachers were happy to see that after the summer vacation, students' debating was still sharp. Especially, time management was good with many debaters making full use of the time they are given.
Good job, everyone!
