探究プロジェクトin甲南女子大学 ~「和食」を日本・世界から捉える

From July 31st to August 3rd, 11 of our female first year high school students took part in a 探究プロジェクト in Konan Women's University in Kobe.

On the first day, they went to the university. At first, they were introduced to the two professors who would be running the project: Professors Yoshitaka Iwasaki and Ikue Hamaguchi. Then, they listened to a lecture by Professor Hamaguchi about Japanese food culture and health. Next, they took a lunch break and had the chance to try the university cafeteria! After lunch, they listened to Professor Iwasaki talk about the international perspective on Japanese food. Finally, Professor Hamaguchi gave them some advice about giving effective presentations and Professor Iwasaki explained how they should prepare for their final presentations on the fourth day.

On the second day in the morning, the students got practical experience in the university's cooking training room. Then, in the afternoon they were reminded of their presentation topic: What would you like to tell people of the same generation as you and foreigners about Japanese food?

On the third day, the students came to school and researched, planned, made and practiced their presentations.

Finally, on the fourth day, the students returned to the university and gave their presentations in front of the professors and a member of Hibarigaoka's Global Research Division. The first group talked about the vitamins and minerals in healthy food and some of their benefits, especially they focused on foods that boost concentration to help studying, such as fruits. The next group talked about meal replacement foods and drinks, for example Calorie Mate, and how these help us stay healthy even when we are too busy with work or study. The final group presented about school lunches and food education. After each presentation there was a very active Q&A session with many questions and comments coming from the students and staff members. Finally, there were some closing words from the university professors.

Overall, the four day project was an excellent opportunity for these students to study about a topic they are especially interested in and deepen their understand. Also, through their excellent presentations and enthusiastic questions, they were able to practice important communication skills for the global world.

Thank you to the Konan Women's University Staff. We hope for more collaboration in the future!
