Hello from GKS!

Global Kids School, or GKS, is a new after-school program here at Hibarigaoka Gakuen that allows kindergarten and 1st grade students to go above and beyond and focus more on the Japanese language and spirit, as well as have an exposure to English from a young age. This will help give them a good foundation to be successful in their future education, allowing them to become well-rounded global citizens.
In our English class, the main goal is to have fun! Each month we have a new theme and learn about a variety topics ranging from “flowers and seeds,” where we got to plant sunflower seeds in the garden of the Kokutensha, to learning about the ocean and different sea creatures. Through these different topics, we are able to learn the English basics- colors, numbers, and animals, for example, as well as simple grammar points through singing songs, playing games, doing crafts, and reading stories together. We also take time to learn the alphabet and phonics, building up a foundation to read and write.
Because our class is completely in English, this really allows for an immersive experience. Children are so curious, open, and adaptable at this age and they absorb the new language quickly and naturally. Their confidence has grown so much in such a short time. It’s amazing to see the things they remember, the connections they make, and how they then use English to express their individual personalities. I look forward to see what they become in the future!
