夏がやってきました。１年生の子どもたちは、小学校ではじめての夏休みを心待ちにしているようです。今学期、１年生は学校生活に慣れるための時間を十分に費やしました。
その中の１つに英語の授業があります。
何か新しいことを学ぶのは、難しいこともあります。新しい言語でも同じです。実際に、新たに言語を学ぶことは一番難しいという人もいます。そんな中、１年生は、授業中、本当に前向きに取り組むことができました。この「新しいことでも前向きに取り組む」という姿勢は、子どもたちがこれから英語を学びつづけていく上での大切な基盤となることでしょう。１年生の子どもたちは、４月からいくらかの種類のクラスルームイングリッシュという、授業中によく使うフレーズを習いました。雲雀丘学園の創立の精神でもある「やってみなはれ」という言葉の通り、今、子どもたちは、それらを積極的に使おうとしています。また、フォニックスの学習もはじまりました。歌を歌ったり、ジェスチャーを用いたりしながら、音とアルファベットの文字とのつながりを学んでいます。歌やジェスチャーを使うことで、子どもたちが楽しみながら取り組めると同時に、記憶にも残りやすくなるので、１年生でもゆっくりと、３文字程度の簡単な単語を読めるようになってきています。



もう１つ、子どもたちにとっての新しい経験となったのが、「みんなの前で話すこと」です。ほとんどの子どもたちにとって、立って、みんなの前で１人で英語を話すというのは全く初めてのことでした。子どもたちは、ランドセルの形をした紙の中に、「教室の中にあるもの」の単元で習った学用品の絵を描きました。そして、それぞれのものをみんなに紹介できるように練習しました。「大きな声ではっきりと話す。」、「聞いている人の方を見て話す。」、この２つが約束でした。多くの子どもたちが習いたての英語を使うことにとても熱心で、勇気を出して手を挙げ、思い切って自分の力で取り組みました。小学校で新たに身につけた力、また自分で書いた絵を誇らしげに見せながら発表しており、本当によくがんばりました。
もうすぐ、子どもたちは、初めての英語の宿題に取り組むことになります。この宿題は、子どもたちが２学期に学校に戻ってきた時、英語を使ってまた、みんなの前で話す練習のために使います。

Summer is upon us and the first graders are looking forward to having their first summer vacation as an Elementary school student. They have had a good amount of time to get acclimated to school life and everything that comes with it.
One of the aspects of school that is very new for them is taking part in English classes. Learning something new can be a very difficult thing to do and learning a new language is no different. In fact, some might argue that it is the most difficult thing to learn. The first graders though, have done a great job thus far through participation and outgoingness to try new things that they are coming along quite nicely. Through their mindset of the school’s motto, “Yatteminahare”, and their openness, the students have started to become familiar with many different classroom phrases that they are now using within the class. They have also started learning about what sounds different alphabet make through the singing of phonics songs as well as using different hand gestures to help them to remember those sounds and are now being able to use this skill to decode three-letter words.
Another area where many children are getting a new experience is through public speaking. For many of them, it is still a new concept to get up and speak in front of others, let alone to do it while speaking in English. Students made backpack crafts which they drew pictures of classroom items in that they learned the names of. Then they practiced introducing what each item was so that they would be ready to do it in front of the rest of the class. They were encouraged to remember to speak loudly and clearly while also keeping eye contact with the audience. Many of them were so eager to use their newly acquired language skills that they bravely volunteered to venture into the wild on their own. Everyone did an amazing job they were very proud to show off their new skills as well as their drawings.
Soon the students will also be expected to finish their first ever English homework. This will be used when the children come back to school to once again help them to be able to practice for a presentation they will do for others all while challenging themselves to do their best using English.
