2nd Year Junior High Communication Classes

Knowing how to check in at a hotel is a practical skill that will be quite useful for many of our students the first time they travel abroad without their parents.

To be successful at this task, our students need some practice, both with the kind of vocabulary they need to have to do a successful check-in and with asking and answering the questions this task requires.

In this week’s lessons, our JH2 students first warmed up by asking each other about their summer holidays. They needed to ask as many questions as possible and then report to another student what they had learned about their first partner’s summer holiday.

This was followed by a listening activity. Students heard a dialog at a front desk of a hotel and had to fill in the missing words on a worksheet. They then used the completed dialog to practice reading it in pairs. The dialog contained much of the target language that we want our students to become familiar with and use in the roleplay we would do later in the lesson.
Finally, our students did a hotel check-in roleplay. They took turns taking the roles of hotel guest and hotel front desk staff. On their worksheet, there were some questions for which they needed to get answers and answers for the questions their partner would ask them. Each student had four roleplays they needed to complete, so they did 8 roleplays with their partner by the end of class.
Students were told that these roleplays were preparation for a roleplay test they would have at the end of the term. This motivated them to work hard on the roleplays. I was pleased to see how much they were enjoying these roleplays and hope that they will use some of the language they used today the first time they really need to do a hotel check-in in English.
